I stayed in the Infirmary for a long time. I had not wanted to part with Sister Jane, but eventually Constance convinced me to leave. I would not sleep alone, I had vowed. There was not any lock, and I had heard from whispers in the ward that Peter was still in the village, frequenting the alehouses, sleeping on the streets. There was nothing to keep him from Lacock Abbey, Legh-men or none.

“Constance,” I whispered as we were walked into Mass. Silence was still enforced.

“Elisa?” She had doted on me, visiting me every single day I had been in the Infirmary.

“I do not want to sleep in my room.”

She nodded seriously. “You can sleep in my bed. It is big enough.”

Relief. Constance would be next to me. If he did choose to come to Lacock, he would have to fight a room full of women, not to mention this particular angry Sister. He had brutally attacked two of her closest friends in a matter of weeks. There would be no getting past her. Still … “Can I sleep on the side of you that is least near the door?” I had said it before I could stop myself.

“Of course.” She squeezed my hand and passed me my office book.
